Our school administration recently made time for a group of teacher to present a range of PD topics to the staff at Ewa Makai Middle School. It was an awesome opportunity to share our unique insights from the Future Ready course while also strengthening the tech focus of the school and spreading tech awareness and skills. Being one of the few teachers left that was here at Ewa Makai since it's opening in 2011, I am proud to see a return to the in-house PD sharing that I tried to develop from the very beginning when we hosted a "Tech Exchange" back in 2013. The concept was for our school to share our best tech tips with each other. I really enjoy these types of PD days over "professionals" coming in telling us how to use a range of tools or mandated bits of information. I think this is not only a bonding experience for the staff, but it also helps us understand each teacher's skill sets and thus strengthens the core of technology being used at the school. I hope that in the future, our administration continues this tradition. Below is the presentation that I made and shared with 14 participants from my school in a 1 session break out. Unfortunately I could only host 1 session as I was called away to record the other teachers in their sessions as well.
Data Key: Plays = How many different IP addresses have accessed the video. Loads = How many times the video itself was played. Unlike YouTube, success on Vimeo is measured by the amount of LOADS you get. It is the same thing as "views" on YouTube. Since the community on Vimeo is a lot smaller than YouTube, Likes and Comments are much more difficult to come by and are not a very good measure of how successful a video is. The map on the right highlights areas our videos have been played. Our videos have been seen throughout the Americas and Europe, parts of Asia, and even Africa! Talk about being Global!

Our programs include an Exploratory program for students interested in learning more about video production and an Advanced program for students who would like to extend their learning into professional and real-world video production. About Mr. ToyotaWhen they say "professions run in the family," the saying holds true for my family and I. My mother, my aunty, and my grandmother were all teachers before me and I didn't ever think I'd be the one to take up the mantle. I've been teaching since 2008 and started at the age of 23 years old.
I'm a National Board Certified teacher with a Bachelor's in Secondary Education: Social Studies. Additionally, I have served in various roles ranging from an HSTA PD Trainer and Consultant, AVID Site Team Member, Club Advisory, Volleyball Coach, Event Organizer, and Chair for the CxK Media Cohort. Basic Teaching PhilosophyThere are constantly occurring learning opportunities. As a teacher, it is my duty to not only help students see these opportunities at face value, but to help them profit from these experiences.
I believe that learning is growing and that growing in the right direction is an important aspect of being successful. I can help the imperfect, I can hardly help those who are perfect. Although academics is an important part of a child's life, I understand that a child's life is even more important than school as an institution. Homework, tests, grades, and due dates pale in comparison to preparing a child for their future. I am but one person amongst a community of people that will come into a child's life, whether my role is small or large, my actions have lasting implications. I will always strive to make a difference, to help student's grow in the right direction, to develop their passions, and to prepare them for the struggles ahead. It is my duty, my honor, and my will as their teacher. - Ethan Toyota Archives
